Bleeding gums – why do my gums bleed?

By Sakhr A. Murshid Al-Kubati, PhDClinical review: pendingLast reviewed

Gums that bleed when you brush are a common early sign of gum disease. It can often get better with good daily cleaning.

Teeth and gums, with a thin coral line along the gum edge showing where plaque builds up.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. It does not replace a check by a dentist or doctor. If you are worried, contact a dental professional.

Why it happens

Plaque is a sticky film of germs. When it builds up where the tooth meets the gum, the gum gets red, swollen and sore, and may bleed. This early stage is called gingivitis.

If it is not treated, it can become periodontitis. This harms the tissue and bone that hold teeth in place. Teeth can become loose.
