Intraoral scanning: digital impressions
An intraoral scanner is a small wand that takes a 3D picture of your teeth and gums. It can replace the soft putty used for impressions.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. It does not replace a check by a dentist or doctor. If you are worried, contact a dental professional.
What it is used for
- Crowns, inlays and bridges.
- Clear aligners and night guards.
- Planning guides for implant surgery.
What to expect
- The dentist moves the wand over your teeth.
- Many people find it quicker and more comfortable than putty.
Limits
Scans are accurate for single crowns and short bridges. For a full arch, or for removable dentures, studies show they may be less accurate than traditional impressions. Your dentist chooses the best method.
