Orthodontics: braces and aligners
Orthodontic treatment moves teeth and jaws into a better position. It can help you chew, clean your teeth and smile.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. It does not replace a check by a dentist or doctor. If you are worried, contact a dental professional.
Why people get braces
- Teeth are crowded, crooked or stick out.
- Top and bottom jaws do not meet well (overbite or underbite).
- There are big gaps between teeth.
- It is hard to chew or clean because of how the teeth sit.
Types
- Fixed braces – small brackets glued to each tooth, joined by a wire. They may be metal or tooth-coloured.
- Removable aligners – clear trays, used under a dentist's or orthodontist's care.
What to expect
- Treatment often starts between ages 8 and 14, but adults can have braces too.
- Most people wear braces for 1 to 3 years.
- Teeth may feel sore for a few days after fitting. Soft food helps.
- You will have check-ups every 6 to 8 weeks.
- After braces, you wear a retainer to stop teeth moving back.
When to see a dentist
- A wire or bracket breaks or pokes your mouth.
- You had a knock to a front tooth before or during treatment. Tell the orthodontist.
