Special care needs
Everyone should get dental care. Some people need extra time, support or special equipment.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. It does not replace a check by a dentist or doctor. If you are worried, contact a dental professional.
Who may need extra help
- People with physical disabilities, who may find it hard to get into a building or the dental chair.
- People with learning disabilities, who may need more time and calm support.
- People with complex medical conditions, who may need special care during treatment.
Getting care
- Many general dentists can help. Tell them what you need when you book.
- If more support is needed, a dentist or doctor can refer you to a special care dental service.
- These services may offer longer visits, adapted rooms, and medicine to relax, or treatment while asleep if needed.
Making brushing easier
- A brush with a small head and soft to medium bristles.
- A thicker handle or a special grip.
- An electric toothbrush, which does much of the work.
Medicines
Some liquid medicines contain sugar. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about sugar-free options. Bring a list of medicines to dental visits.
When to see a dentist
- Brushing is hard and you need advice.
- There is pain, swelling or bleeding in the mouth.
